Under the tree’s canopy interwoven with sparkling moonlight,
Heard the music of dancing elves therein (Mendelssohn)
The band
We are based in Cambridge but are able to travel. Dancing Yew is typically a four-piece band plus caller with extensive experience playing for ceilidhs at a wide variety of events including weddings, parties, folk events, Burns nights, corporate and other performances.
Our line-up usually includes whistle/saxophone, melodeon, keyboard and bodhran and bring our own PA equipment. Our caller will guide your dancers, whatever level of experience they may have.
We are a flexible group, if you would like to discuss specific requirements.
Booking
To start the booking process please use the contact form. Please include the date, approximate timings, location, type of event and any specific requirements. I will then check with the rest of the band if they are available and get back to you as soon as possible with a quote.
Music
Our tune folder contains 121 individual tunes (including many original compositions), lovingly wrapped in 44 separate sets. It has almost equal parts Scottish and Irish tunes, which make up about a third each. Other significant origins include English and Scandinavian. The most common key is A major (16.5%), followed closely by D major, then A minor!
Why Yew?
Yews have fascinated me for years, for their form, longevity and the myths and legends associated with them.
